During and immediately after birth, doctors and nurses must be extremely careful in the delivery and care of a newborn. Incidents can occur where the child is starved for oxygen. This can happen before delivery, in situations where the umbilical cord is wrapped around the child's neck, or complications with the pregnancy cause the fetal heart rate to drop to dangerously low levels, resulting in oxygen deprivation. After birth, things like improperly placed breathing tubes and failure to recognize medical issues like jaundice can result in more medical complications for the child.
One of the more severe medical conditions that can occur due to situations like those mentioned above is Cerebral Palsy. Cerebral Palsy is damage to the brain, which can occur before, during, or after childbirth. Hypoxia, or oxygen deprivation, can be a cause of severe brain damage, as can jaundice. With proper medical care and attention, many of these complications can be treated before they cause any damage to the child. Unfortunately in some cases, the inability to properly diagnose and treat these conditions can lead to permanent brain damage, with effects ranging from mild to severe.
If your child suffered brain damage as a result of improper care or an improper diagnosis, you may have legal rights, including monetary compensation. Contact one of the Dayton medical malpractice attorneys at Thorson, Switala, Mondock & Snead, LLP today to discuss your case.
